Exploring Rosenshine’s Principles as an Explicit Teaching Approach
Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS)
Through the Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) program, St Kevin’s has received funding and we have created a Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader (MHWL). This is a registered teacher who works across the whole school to support the mental health and wellbeing of students.
MHWLs help teachers recognise and support students who may be struggling with their mental health in the classroom. The Leader will help the school set up clear pathways so students can get extra support when needed, either within the school or through external services.
The Leader will also work closely with school leaders, wellbeing teams, teachers, families and community services to coordinate targeted support for students. Importantly, MHWLs encourage student voice, helping students feel heard and involved in decisions about their wellbeing.
MHWLs receive specialised training and ongoing professional learning through Learning Communities, with training designed and delivered by the University of Melbourne.
